about

3. Pulling Teeth
I was pulling third shift of the child-rearing in my daughter’s first week of life, which basically meant I was generally up from about midnight till 8 or 9 a.m. Being a new dad, if the baby fell asleep on my chest, that’s where she slept. I wasn’t about to move her for fear of waking her and thereby waking my exhausted wife, who didn’t do a lot of sleeping that first month. So, with a newborn asleep on my chest in our rocking recliner, I watched Ken Burn’s Jazz. All of it. In a week. The fifteen minutes of Dave Brubeck focused entirely on Time Out, the jazz album with compound and complex time signatures—I’m sure you know “Take Five.” Well, the song they focused on was “Blue Rondo ala Turk,” which is an awesome tune mostly in 9/8. I utterly ripped off the main riff for “Pulling Teeth.” I’m actually listening to it right now, and yeah, blatant. Lyrically, the song deals entirely with my irritation at people sloughing off at their jobs. Be it that little shit at McDonald’s who rolls his eyes at you when you try to explain to him that the food he gave you is inedible or what I was dealing with at the time, “talent buyers” at clubs that can’t answer an email, or bands that can’t show up to the show after I’ve done ALL of the work for said show. IT’S WORK! DO YOUR JOB!
