about

7. Hazel Anne
This is my daughter’s name, and this song is about her, entirely. Gross, huh? And pretty un-metal. I’m supposed to be writing about disemboweling things and corpses and whatnot, and here’s a swing instrumental about my baby. I guess it’s no wonder I’m not really in the metal club. I saw my daughter’s heartbeat up on a screen when she was two months along. She didn’t even look like anything, just this blob of dots with one little dot going 173 bpm in the middle. Right then, I said that I needed to write a song at 173 bpm. Also at the time I was one year into playing trombone in a swing band for the first time in several years, and I was really enjoying playing big-band arrangements. Just like with the march, I figured it was time to write a swing tune. I’ve never been the biggest fan of vocals anyways, so instrumental was obviously the right move. So, I set about writing a swing chart at 173 bpm. THIS IS THE HARDEST TUNE I’VE EVER TRIED TO PLAY OR RECORD. I spent a month just practicing the solo, all the while thinking, “Why couldn’t she have had a heartbeat at 150, like a sensible human.” I did finally get it recorded, and it’s far from a perfect performance, but much like its namesake, I am more proud of this song than any other I’ve ever recorded. True story: I finished writing the tune the morning my wife went into labor.
